Traffic and Transportation (Railway Transportation)

Railway transportation is a traditional major with advantage in the field of Transportation. This major has started enrollment since 1909 with many graduates being experts, scholars in railway transport management, and executives in railway transport industry. With influence and high reputation in the industry both at home and abroad, Railway transport was selected into “Outstanding Engineer Training Program” in 2010.

Since sophomore year, on the basis of learning traffic and transportation major fundamental courses, students will move the focus to study basic theory of railway transport, as well as starting practical and innovative ability training. Core courses include theory courses like railway train scheduling, railway station-yard and junction terminal, railway freight transportation, railway passenger traffic etc. and practical courses like courses design, railway transport comprehensive experiment, railway transport production practice etc.

This major is designed to cultivate high-level technology talents in railway transport planning, design and management. Graduates are able to work in transportation management administration, planning and designing institute, scientific and research institution, rail transit operating companies, railway bureau or railway corporation, transportation department of large logistics and mine corporation, international traffic consulting company, traffic and transportation financial investment and management institution like bank and security company.

Our school’s railway transport major is the first in this kind domestically, as well as our traditional advanced one, providing a large number of talents in railway transport management, research and engineering. Now many executives, researchers and scientific and technical workers in railways administration, railway bureau and basic stations are originated from this major. Graduates mainly go to railway train scheduling & passengers and freight transit service organization, railways design and scientific research institutions, logistics enterprises, expresses enterprises, related academic institutions, railway agencies around the country and marketing agencies.

Introduction to expert: Professor Zhou Leishan, Director of the Department Of Transportation Management Engineering, expert in railway transport. Professor Zhou has led in a lot of high-level academic projects like national 863 projects. He is the winner of the Significant achievement prize in national science and technology breakthrough and Technology progress prize both in Beijing and Railway Bureau. Zhou has also been elected as “my favorite teacher” in consecutive years.

Railway transport is one of the most time-honored, distinctive and strongest majors in Beijing Jiaotong University, relating to fields like scheduling, designing, operating, management etc. in railway transport. The theory of all majors is mature with a lot of opportunities, and graduates can seek jobs in different types of enterprises. Railway transport plays an important role in our 5 main ways of transportation and is a key part of our transportation industry. We can study knowledge of majors related to railway transport, and master professional knowledge like railway transport scheduling theory, railway station yard design etc. Through practical activities, we can get to know on-site work of this field and learn how to combine reality with our theory. On the basis of railway transport, we can explore to urban road transport and urban rail traffic in order to establish comprehensive transport theory.

Traffic and transportation (urban rail traffic)

In order to meet the demand from rapid development of urban rail traffic, on the profound basis of railway transport, we found major direction in urban rail traffic through practical teaching and theory with characteristics. Being admitted into “Outstanding Engineer Training Program” in 2010, this major cultivates executives and engineering talents in urban rail traffic planning, designing, construction and management.

Since sophomore year, students will learn professional theory systematically and start practical activity. Core courses include urban rail traffic planning and designing, urban rail traffic system operation and management, urban passengers transport management and emergency respond, rail trains scheduling calculation and designing, rail trains operation control system and urban planning etc. Practical activities include courses design, comprehensive experiment and production practice, which are highly relevant to major.

Graduates are able to find job in organizations related to urban rail traffic planning, designing, construction, consulting and operation. For instance, Beijing Urban Engineering Design & Research Institute Co., Ltd, Beijing General Municipal Engineering Design & Research Institute Co., Ltd, Beijing Municipal Institute of City Planning & Designing, Beijing Infrastructure Investment Co., Ltd, Beijing MTR Construction Administration Corporation, China Metro Engineering Consulting Corporation, and Beijing Subway. Our urban rail traffic is the earliest-founded in China, cultivating talents with open horizon and comprehensive abilities. Department chooses open teaching method, on one hand, enabling students to get in touch with rail transit practice closely and directly; on the other hand, increasing research skills through courses design and subject competition. It has been proven that these methods have been achieved  great success, some students get awards from national level to provincial and city level, some continue to study for master degree and doctor degree, and those who join in work always get compliment from the enterprises.

Introduction to expert: Professor Mao Baohua, Director of the Department of Urban Rail Traffic, expert in urban rail traffic, has won second prize of National Natural Science Prize, title of “Beijing Distinguished Teacher” and “Baogang National Excellent Teacher”.

Due to the fast construction of urban rail traffic, there is a huge need for talents in planning and designing, operation and management. With brilliant faculty teams and perfect courses system, our urban rail traffic major enable students to practice in Beijing railway national program education center. Under the instruction of both teachers and skilled-workers on site, we can go practice in rail yard and stations. By doing this, we can deepen our understanding in professional knowledge and learn more about the frontier technological knowledge in this field. Besides, we have other courses implementation to train the ability of students to find, analyze and solve problems, in the meantime to improve their ability in coordination, cooperation and communication. In this way, students will improve their theory understanding and comprehensive ability in practice.

Introduction to student: Lu Kai, 2009, from School of traffic and transportation, has been recommended for doctor degree in Beijing Jiaotong University in 2012. He won the title of  “University Merit Student”, scholarship for “Mao Yisheng rail education”, and second prize of Beijing traffic technology competition.


Traffic and transportation (Intellectual transport engineering)

With the assistance of national first-level disciplines like traffic transport engineering, security science and engineering, and control-science and engineering, rail transportation control and security national lab, Beijing urban traffic information intelligence and service engineering technology research center, our major is able to cultivate comprehensive talents carrying fused knowledge like traffic transport engineering, auto-control, telecommunications and computer technology.. Also our major will cultivate talents with abundant basic knowledge, broad horizon, and creativity, meeting the need of automation, informatization, intellectualization of traffic transport industry, carrying knowledge like traffic transport basic theory, traffic transport intellectual detection, traffic transport intellectual information processing, traffic transport control and intellectual transport system designing etc., bearing quality of humanity, engineering and science, who are able to solve technology and engineering problems in intellectual transport and to perform jobs like intellectual traffic transport equipment and system research, designing, development, technology management.

Intellectual transport is the ultimate and tendency of traffic transport industry development, as a result, high-level and comprehensive talents with informatization background are needed. Compared with other universities, there are following distinguish characteristics of our intellectual transport engineering major: Firstly, we make use of our advantage in traffic transport for past centuries, through traffic transport engineering national disciplines, rail traffic control and security national lab, and the talents training base, and provide students with better learning environment and learning background support; secondly, we strengthen our practice part during teaching, which enables students to possess professional knowledge and the ability to perform.

Intellectual transport engineering is an undergraduate major newly founded by School of traffic and transportation following the tendency of traffic transport development, in order to cultivate brilliant talents in traffic and transportation industry. Thanks to the background of School of traffic and transportation, combining computer science, telecommunications technology and system control technology, intellectual transport engineering is an inter-discipline which is able to adapt to the flourish of future traffic transport, and dedicated to cultivating brilliant engineers in the industry.

Around the world, development of intellectual transport is in blossom. Domestically, our intellectual transport is in fast development, therefore, there is huge need for talents in intellectual transport. Intellectual transport is a new and wide field to fulfill ourselves, we will certainly achieve the goal.

Traffic transportation (High-speed railway passenger transport scheduling and service)

In order to meet the urgent need of our high-speed railway development and international strategy for talents, thanks to traffic and transportation engineering national key discipline, we have established High-speed railway passengers transport scheduling and service major. This aims for cultivating high-level engineering technology talents and comprehensive operation management talents in high-speed railway network planning, transport capacity resource allocation, products design and marketing, transport scheduling and service management.

Since sophomore year, students will learn high-speed railway transport basic theory systematically. Adopting university-enterprises tutorial system, practice ability and creativity will be strengthened. Core courses include theory courses like high-speed railway passenger transport scheduling, high-speed railway time scheduling, high-speed railway station yard and hub, high-speed railway passenger transport service, and practice courses like courses design related to the theory courses, railway transport comprehensive experiment, and high-speed railway passenger transport production practice.

Graduates are able to work in relevant Railway Bureau management departments, stations, railway planning and designing institute, high-speed railway corporations and international enterprises related to high-speed railway.


Traffic engineering

Aiming to meet the great demand of society and industry development, taking road traffic as characteristic, this major takes full advantage of our school’s traffic and transportation, focuses on the fields in traffic system analysis, planning, design, traffic system intellectualization, traffic environment and security, and cultivates brilliant engineering and management talents who can lead the development of industry. Our major was chosen as national special major point in 2007; and our faculty was chosen as national teaching team in 2009. We completed “National Professional Certification for National Engineering Education”, and the major was listed in “Outstanding Engineers Training Program” in 2013.

Core courses include traffic planning, traffic design, traffic management and control, road engineering etc. and related experiments and professional practice. Graduates are able to work in development and reform department, traffic and transportation department, urban and rural construction department, public security traffic management department, urban planning department, as well as planning, design, and research institutes belonging to these departments (e.g. traffic planning and design institute, city planning and design institute, traffic survey and design institute). Meanwhile, they can also work in banks or consulting companies to evaluate investment, or in traffic operation, command and dispatch department to perform traffic scheduling and management.

Traffic engineering is a national special major with national teaching teams, national quality courses and a national teaching demonstration spot. Aiming to meet the need of society and industry development, our major takes urban traffic planning, design and operation management as main direction, and the students we cultivate are open-minded with firm foundation and excellent engineering quality. With macro decision-making and technology management, our major is suitable for students who are interested in this.    

Graduates are able to work in development and reform department, traffic and transportation department, urban and rural construction department, public security traffic management department, urban planning department, as well as planning, design, and research institutes belonging to these departments (e.g. traffic planning and design institute, city planning and design institute, traffic survey and design institute) to perform management, engineering technology, and research work. Meanwhile, they can work in development banks and consulting companies for investment evaluation or in traffic operation, command and dispatch department to perform traffic scheduling and management. Our major has relatively high rate of postgraduate recommendation, taking examination for postgraduate degree or going abroad for further study. Also, our curriculums can be well fit with curriculums opened by world well-known universities. Therefore, we welcome students who would like to study abroad.

Introduction to expert: Professor Shao Chunfu, expert with State Council government subsidy, has won the prize of “Scientific Olympic advanced individual”, “Beijing distinguished teacher”, “Beijing excellent teacher”, “Beijing professional ethics advanced individual” and “Baogang national excellent teacher”.

We have got national excellent teaching team, national brilliant curriculums as well as national experiment teaching center and the key labs. I chose this major because of the academic atmosphere. We have studied traffic light time distribution under sun burn, surveyed rush hour data in cold winter, discussed black spots of accidents in production practice, and listened to series lectures from traffic police. When we are giving, we are also receiving knowledge, honor and friendship. Meanwhile, we have formed team spirit and a sense of group honor. I like my major very much. All of my professors are friendly and serious with profession, also most of them have a Doctor degree with experience of studying abroad. This major is fit for students to pursue further study home and abroad with promising future after graduation.

Introduction to student: Wang Bobin, 2008, from School of Traffic and Transportation, has been recommended to our school’s Traffic transport planning and management for Doctor degree. Wang has won various kinds of scholarship, “Challenger” Extracurricular Academic Technology Works Contest, third prize in National team, Special prize in Municipal team.


Logistics engineering

This major is closely combine with the need of national economy and social development for modern logistics talents, making use of our advantage and characteristics in traffic and transport, introduces modern logistics thoughts, theories and technology, stresses professional knowledge and ability promotion like modern logistics system planning and design, logistics service operation management, logistics informatization technology, supply chain and industry chain layout and design etc., and cultivates logistics engineering technology and management talents with thoughts of logistics systematization and integration and abilities like logistics system operation and design.

Since sophomore year, students will systematically learn basic theory, knowledge and technology of logistics engineering, and start training practice, innovation, and coordination. Through the learning of core theory courses, and the practice courses combined with theory courses, like courses design, professional comprehensive experiment and production practice, students will improve the ability of innovation.

Graduates are able to work in government logistic management department, domestic and foreign renowned logistic enterprises, as well as large-scale modern manufacture enterprises, business enterprises and logistic department of emerging technology enterprises. Meanwhile, students can also work in planning institute, design institute, research institute, and banks for logistic planning, design, research and evaluation.

Transport is one of the most important key contents of logistic. Our logistics engineering was founded on freight transport major scientific research with hundreds of years of history and teaching advantages. Combining with the need for logistic talents of national economy and social development, through teaching method of open-research, enable students to do logistics engineering practice. Learning transport and logistics-related basic theories and practical technology, students will be skilled in innovation and practice cultivated and trained, so that they could become professional talents in logistics field with wide-open horizon and comprehensive abilities.

Taking advantage of the background of traffic and transportation, we major adapt to the need of e-commerce development in internet era and cultivates high-end engineering and management talents who are able to perform e-commerce system design and development, commerce operation, and logistics management with basic knowledge and technology of math, foreign languages, computer and internet communications, information processing, economy management and commerce operation.

During learning period, students will learn humanities basic disciplines, and nature science basic disciplines like math, and physics etc., management and operation research, webpage and WEB program design technology, computer networks and internet, analysis and design of e-commerce system, e-commerce economy, marketing, and modern logistics technology and management etc. Also, students can have courses of e-commerce business website design and development, e-commerce comprehensive experiment and professional practice courses etc.

Now many universities have established e-commerce major, and most have their own characteristics. However, our characteristic is taking traffic transportation as background. We can get in touch with wide range of professional knowledge: In the aspects of technology and practice, we mainly learn about computer. In the aspects of profession, we learn about economics, management, e-commerce management, commerce system analysis and design etc. Cutting-edge thoughts of modern commerce management are included in these courses. Though the learning of knowledge, we are able to know other relevant knowledge through one case. As an e-commerce major student, whether to go for further education or find a job, combining theory with practice will always be beneficial.
