Department of Transportation Management Engineering
The Department of Transportation Management Engineering (TME) was founded alongside Beijing Jiaotong University more than a century ago and is widely recognized as the birthplace of modern transportation education in China. Since enrolling its first cohort of students in 1909, the TME department has remained dedicated to cultivating professionals for the national railway industry, producing China’s earliest generation of railway management talent. In 1981, the TME department was among the first in China to be authorized to award master degrees in Transportation Management Engineering, further received authorization to award doctoral degrees in 1986, and later established a postdoctoral research station in 1993. In 2010, the TME department was selected for the national “Excellence Engineer Education and Training Program”, further affirming its long-standing influence in the field. The TME department maintains a strong and influential academic faculty team, including distinguished professors and experts who have made significant contributions to the development of China’s railway industry. It currently has 47 members, including 17 professors, 22 associate professors, and 8 lectures, among whom 40 holding doctoral degrees.
The TME department is responsible for the development of the key undergraduate and graduate programs in Railway Transportation and Highspeed Railway Passenger Transport Organization and Service, while also supporting broader disciplinary development in Transportation Engineering and Transport Safety Science and Engineering. It hosts several nationally and municipally recognized teaching teams, along with award-winning educators at multiple levels. The TME department has developed two national-level open online courses, i.e., High-Speed Railway Panorama and Railway History, as well as a number of nationally accredited core courses, including Transportation Organization and Railway Operation Organization, and municipal-level exemplary courses such as Traffic Safety Engineering. Many of its textbooks, adopted as nationally planned or municipally distinguished works, have become standard references across China’s transportation education system. Over the decades, the TME department has trained generations of professionals who now play vital roles in leadership, technical innovation, and system operations throughout China’s transportation and railway sectors, earning strong recognition from society
Research within the TME department focuses on railway operations and organization, railway freight transport, railway passenger transport, railway stations and terminals, railway transport safety, and railway informatics. Over the past three years, the TME department has undertaken more than 100 competitive grants at the national and provincial levels, including projects funded by the National Key R&D Program, the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the China State Railway Group Co., Ltd, and the National Railway Administration, along with more than 150 industry-sponsored projects. Annual research funding totals approximately 45 million RMB. The TME department holds dozens of invention patents and software copyrights and has achieved impactful achievements in areas such as the Belt and Road Initiative, highspeed railway operations, heavy-haul railway transport, multimodal transport, railway informatization, and freight transport safety technologies. Many of these research outcomes have been implemented in real-world railway operations, generating substantial economic and social benefits.
