Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is the “4+0” training model? Do students have opportunities to go abroad?

The Transportation (Joint Program) major follows a four-year structure in which students complete their full-time studies at Beijing Jiaotong University. Dutch faculty members regularly travel to China to teach courses. Students may participate in summer study tours in Europe. In the fourth academic year, they will spend two weeks at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) for academic exchange. Students may also apply—based on their interests—for a three-month intensive research internship and visiting program at TU Delft.

2. What kind of university is Delft University of Technology?

Founded in 1842 in the historic cultural city of Delft in the southern Netherlands, Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) is the oldest and largest university of technology in the country, offering the most comprehensive range of engineering disciplines. Renowned as the “MIT of Europe,” TU Delft enjoys an outstanding reputation in engineering education. It is ranked 49th globally in the 2024–2025 QS World University Rankings and consistently ranks among the world’s top institutions in fields such as civil engineering, architecture, and mechanical engineering.

The collaborating school, the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences, is internationally recognized in civil and transportation engineering and has maintained a leading position in the QS ranking for Civil Engineering for many years. Its Department of Transport & Planning is dedicated to developing efficient, safe, and sustainable transportation systems. Research topics include transportation system modeling, travel behavior analysis, smart city mobility, and infrastructure management. The department’s research achievements are widely applied in transportation policymaking and practice across Europe and globally, providing strong scientific and theoretical support for the high-quality development of transportation systems.

3. How are the program fees structured?

1) Fees at Beijing Jiaotong University:

4. What are the application requirements for this program?

The program enrolls 60 students nationwide each year and is included in China’s national college admission plan. After enrollment, all foreign-language instruction is conducted in English, and a significant number of courses are taught entirely in English. Applicants are expected to have a solid foundation in English. Students with color blindness are not eligible to apply.

5. Can students adapt to full English-medium instruction?

Core courses in this major are taught fully in English. During the first two years, Chinese instructors provide supplementary guidance to help students transition smoothly and gradually adapt to the internationalized learning environment. Alongside training students’ professional competence, the program places great emphasis on English proficiency and cross-cultural communication skills and offers a dedicated IELTS Scholarship to encourage students to strengthen their language abilities and broaden their global perspective.

6. What certificates will students receive upon graduation?

Students who complete all required coursework and successfully pass the jointly supervised graduation project will be awarded the Bachelor of Engineering degree and graduation certificate from Beijing Jiaotong University (identical to those of other BJTU majors), as well as an official certificate documenting their study experience at Delft University of Technology.

7. Can students from this program pursue a master’s degree at Delft University of Technology?

TU Delft offers further study opportunities to high-performing students in this program who demonstrate strong academic potential. Each year, up to 60% of the cohort may be admitted to TU Delft’s master’s programs, provided that they meet the relevant graduate admission requirements.

8. Are there dedicated scholarships for this program?

Yes. The program has established a comprehensive, multi-dimensional scholarship system spanning the entire academic development cycle. Available awards include the Overseas Study Scholarship, Postgraduate Recommendation & Entrance Exam Scholarship, Academic Excellence Scholarship, and IELTS Scholarship. Scholarships are granted based on criteria and are not subject to a total funding cap.

9. What are the prospects for further studies and employment?

As of the Class of 2024 (4 cohorts), the overall rate of further studies exceeds 78%. Domestic further-study destinations include top universities such as Peking University, Tsinghua University, Zhejiang University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Beijing Jiaotong University, the University of Hong Kong, and Southeast University.

For overseas study, 85% of students have been admitted to universities ranked within the QS global top 50, including King’s College London, the National University of Singapore, University College London, the University of California, Berkeley, and the Technical University of Munich. More than 98% have entered QS top-100 institutions.

In terms of employment, graduates are broadly represented in railway, metro, logistics, aviation, and other transportation-related sectors. Employers include agencies under the Ministry of Transport, China Railway and its regional railway corporations, metro corporations across major cities, and well-known companies such as Huawei, Meituan, DJI, and Xiaomi. Some graduates have quickly integrated into international workplaces, joining organizations or companies such as SWARCO (Netherlands), TLT-Turbo GmbH (Germany), and the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT), demonstrating strong global competitiveness and professional adaptability.
